There are plenty of items available for preparing your own bento lunches.
Some of them can be fairly pricey, and if you aren't lucky enough to have a Japanese food store (such as T and T market) in your town, then you may have to order from the internet.
Craft stores, baking stores, and dollar stores can be good places to find Bento items, as long as you know what you're looking for, and can figure out creative uses for everyday things. You could also try hitting up the "Asian" section in your local supermarket, though most aren't very good at deciding what belongs.. my supermarket, for example, sells Mexican food in the "Asian" section.. you know, because Mexico is clearly in Asia...
The recipe books you can pick up for Bento Boxes tend to have some creative uses for everyday kitchen items, and you can shape rice with your hands (coated in salt water) or plastic wrap, so you don't really "need" to buy any bento-specific items, but it can be fun to shop for them, and I'd imagine it can make things easier.
Some basics are:
Bento Box: Obviously. Though you can use regular Tupperware containers, or small dishes. If you want a truly authentic feel, a Bento Box is best. You can buy them online from amazon.com, (though unfortunately not the Canadian site) in various different styles, sizes, and prices. Another good site for Bento gear is laptoplunches.com they sell less traditionally styled bento boxes, as well as recipe books, and tools (such as veggie cutters).
Books: Of course, you could look everything up on the internet these days, but it can be nice to have a book to hold in your hand. You can buy them from practically any book store, or online. Some good books are: Yum-Yum Bento Box and Kawaii Bento Boxes which can both be bought from Chapters for around $15.
Rice Molds:
